Nearly There

“So, what do you do?” – A normal question, but one that’s been difficult for me to answer lately.  I want to say I’m a librarian, but propriety holds me back.  Usually I waffle out some answer made up of the following phrases:

“I’m just finishing library school”

“Well, I’m almost a librarian”

“I’m going to be a librarian in the not-so-distant future”

“I’m a grad student at Syracuse, but I live in Chicago”

What I hear in my head is that annoying shrunken head from the Knight Bus in the third Harry Potter movie screaming NEARLY THERE! NEARLY THERE!  (I hate that head, although in general I love Cuaron’s direction.  Anyway…)

And even though I earlier this week turned in the last paper for the final course of my MSLIS, I still cannot yet claim the coveted title for myself.

This blog is about my internship: the one thing in between me and an easy answer to that question.

But wait, that statement makes an internship sound so banal, like an item on a list that just needs to be checked off.  I can with great certitude say that this is not the case.  As an intern for the Association of Library Collections & Technical Services at the American Library Association (or ALCTS at the ALA, in acronymese), I have not been bored for one nanosecond of the past several weeks.  And so, I’ve decided to start this new blog to spread the excitement around and help keep me from annoying my loved ones by talking constantly about how much I love what I do.  (Well, I’ll probably still annoy them, but at least they can tell me to save it for the blog.)

What do I do?

I’m an ALA intern (and the nearly there librarian- at least for the next few months).
